Tree lightings are always fun to attend, as much for the smiles on children’s faces as for the visual feast itself. Entertainment is always part of the picture, and there’s no need to leave Fido at home or in the hotel during these fairly brief events taking place at dusk. Among the big ones: A 45-foot tree at Embarcadero Center will be lit, along with lights outlining the buildings, on Nov. 18. The Pier 39 tree lights up at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 20, while Macy’s Union Square tree will be illuminated on Nov. 25. Ghirardelli Square lights its tree that same evening after a day of free family entertainment. The Castro Holiday Tree lighting on Nov. 28 will be accompanied by chorus and band music, while the Ritz-Carlton version of a tree-lighting ceremony includes costumed carolers and holiday confections on Nov. 29. Be sure to bring a treat for Fido so he doesn’t feel left out!
