Bide-A-Wee Inn & Cottages in Pacific Grove
So many top-notch hotels accept dogs on the Monterey Peninsula that you could almost open a phone book, have Spot point with his toenails to one at random and know you’ve made a good choice. But for our money, a property that borders on or is close to public land is a real plus. Being able to walk out the door and soak up scenery and fresh air without getting into a car can make a huge difference in the way you and your furry companion approach the day.
About a dozen dog-friendly properties are concentrated in a quiet corner of Pacific Grove on Asilomar and Lighthouse avenues, a residential block or so inland but still within sound of the sea. These are small, cottage-type properties for the most part, many decades old but all updated for discerning travelers. “Comfortable” rather than “fancy” is the keyword, although some, like Lighthouse Lodge & Suites, are decidedly on the upscale end. Bide-A-Wee Inn & Cottages and Andril Fireplace Cottages are among those with kitchens or kitchenettes, especially handy if you have young children as well as pets. The unifying factor for all is quick access to a glorious stretch of coastline where crashing waves, spouting whales, cawing gulls, pocket beaches and a section of the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail will keep you occupied for hours.
