Thinking of loading up your pack and heading off on a road trip? One of our intrepid trekkers did just that and we have the picture to prove it. She loaded her three pups into the “Doggie Mobile” and headed off for adventure on the highway. With no set plan, other than finding and experiencing dog-friendly spots, they were able to stop when and where they wanted to. One stop was the Larkspur Hotel in Truckee where Bentley, Cooper and Murphy were greeted with doggie treats and presents. As you can see the boys made themselves right at home. Wondering if you have what it takes to try road trekking with your dog? DogTrekker has your handy checklist of the necessities to make sure your highway adventure is fun not frantic.
- Make sure your dog is micro chipped and that her name tag includes your cell-phone number.
- Make sure vaccinations are up to date, and carry copies of the records.
- Make sure your dog is safely secured in the car, whether in a crate or by some other method.
- To avoid stomach upset, pack a supply of your dog's regular food, along with some bottled water.
- Pack a travel kit including dog bowls, pick-up bags, first-aid supplies and favorite toys. Don't forget a bed, blanket or crate for the hotel.
- Reserve well in advance at dog-friendly hotels and call first to get details on fees, weight restrictions and policies.
- Make pet-sitting, doggie daycare or boarding arrangements at your destination in advance, speaking at length with the person who will supervise your four-legged companion.
- Never leave a dog unattended in a hotel room.
- Warm weather and parked vehicles are a fatal combination for canines. Don't go there.
- Stop frequently for exercise and potty breaks – and always, always clean up after your dog.
