The park's landscape was created by volcanic activity as well as erosion from weather and streams. This volcanic region is surrounded by mountain peaks and is covered by black volcanic rock, or basalt.
Created over a million years ago, the layered, porous basalt retains rainwater and snow melt, which forms a large underground reservoir that in turn feeds 129-foot, year-round Burney Falls.
Theodore Roosevelt once proclaimed the cascade as "the eighth wonder of the world," but unfortunately, you and Rover can't view it together.
Park rules state that dogs must be leashed at all times and are not allowed on swimming beaches or on trails, with the exception of the mile-long "Cemetery Trail" with history dating back to the 1800's.
This trail takes you to Lake Britton, where water dogs can swim to their hearts content. Help keep this place beautiful, please clean up after your dogs.
