Sonoma County has plenty of gorgeous scenery to share with your best friend, and plenty of places to make base camp if you’re able to spend the night or make a weekend of it.

On the coast, bed down at a dog-friendly property such as Bodega Coast Inn & Suites, Sonoma Coast Villa & Spa, Bay Hill Mansion B&B or Bodega Bay RV Park and prepare to get sandy, as you’ll likely be exploring nearby beaches and coastal trails. Farther north, Sea Ranch is a peaceful place to rent a vacation home and has a dog-friendly lodge for shorter stays. For romance, look no further than the Whale Watch Inn, a dog-friendly B&B in Gualala featuring ocean views and wood-burning fireplaces in all 18 suites.

In the town of Sonoma, the gracious Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is a 19th-century landmark built in Spanish mission style atop a hot spring discovered in 1895. Easier on the budget and just as dog-welcoming is the Best Western Sonoma Valley Inn. For walking-distance proximity to many dining and shopping opportunities, check out  Bungalows 313, a luxury boutique property just a half-block from historic Sonoma Plaza.

DogTrekkers bedding down in Santa Rosa have many choices. The Hyatt Vineyard Creek in the historic district welcomes pets, as do the Travelodge Santa Rosa and the Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa a bit outside of town. In Petaluma, the two of you can cuddle up at the historic Hotel Petaluma and be right in the middle of the action, or move a bit away from the downtown core to the Sheraton Sonoma County Hotel or Best Western Plus Wine Country Inn, where you can relax in a peaceful, resort-like setting. For family travelers, San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA is a novel choice, offering dog-friendly, full-service cabins with access to amenities including a fenced dog park, agility course and dog-themed events from May to October.

In Healdsburg, you can ruff it in style at the Best Western Dry Creek Inn, the stylish H2hotel just off the downtown plaza or the nearby Camellia Inn, a charming 1869 Italian Victorian B&B.
