If you and King are thinking about heading for the hills, consider the festive weekend of August 8-9, where a $5 donation to the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe gets you a ticket to an epic day of music and craft beer in Palisades Tahoe. It's the 2015 Brews, Jazz & Funk Fest; dogs are welcome to bring their humans, and proceeds go to help HSTT's work. That's good news for local people and their pets, who benefit from the organizations spay-neuter program, pet assisted therapy work, and pet food pantry. It's also great news for the critters currently waiting at HSTT for their adopters to find them.

Like Mable, who's become quite a staff favorite since she arrived from Thailand, with two other dogs rescued from the dog meat trade. Living as a loved dog is a new experience for her, and she's lapping it up, quickly picking up leash manners and social graces. This basenji-mix girl is about 4 years old and has a lovely singing voice; she's also very smart and eager to please, with quite a few endearing tricks she'll perform on command. She's a bit resource-guardy still after her early life experiences, but is learning better ways from her new friends, and looking for the forever home where she can really shine.
