Beach House, about five miles north of the town of Mendocino, has two bedrooms, two baths and an ocean-view deck. Nearby Crane Dance is an oceanfront beauty with five bedrooms, while the more diminutive Distant Shores is one of four homes known as the Mendocino Coast Dunes Retreat. As a bonus, it’s walking distance to MacKerricher State Park and Beach, where leashed dogs are welcome in designated areas. Mendocino Coast Reservations and Mendocino Preferred Vacation Rentals are two more management companies that offer dog-friendly properties in Mendocino.
Just over the Mendocino County border, in far northern Sonoma County, is another great vacation destination: Sea Ranch, the seaside community that was “eco-friendly” before Earth Day was even invented. Today, as in its 1960s infancy, the low-key, architecturally distinct community attracts a clientele with “back to the land” inclinations. Many pet-friendly vacation home rentals are available; we spotted three on VRBO.com and another 18 listed by Sea Ranch Escape Vacation Rentals. Just reading the descriptions made us want to pack up the suitcase and the dog bowls and hit the road!
