In summer, this can be one buggy hike. But on a sunny winter day it's hard to imagine a more delightful close-to-home outing than the mile-long Uvas Canyon Waterfall Loop Trail, an easy promenade through Swanson's Creek Canyon that takes in a trio of cascades between 15 and 30 feet high. Print out a nature guide before leaving home to help appreciate what you'll see upon arrival at Uvas Canyon County Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Morgan Hill. If you want to get really aerobic about it, you can turn this outing into a strenuous, 5.2-mile trek with about 1,400 feet of elevation gain.
